This year’s Red Cross response in Kenya began in the district of Murang’a, where 10,000 people have been displaced by a local landslide.
Today, Red Cross operations in the region are focused on providing relief to those affected by the disaster, and help families who have lost everything. It’s a hard job, as the humanitarian response is much bigger than anything they have seen before.
The Red Cross is coordinating with the Kenya Red Cross Society, police and the national government, and has a team of 18 staff ready to support local residents.
Families have been split up during the upheaval, with pregnant women and children among the most vulnerable to the disaster. Red Cross workers are also trying to reach out to children who may have been separated from their parents during the crisis.
Sarita Sutaria is with the Kenya Red Cross Society, and she is overseeing the response. She says the situation is grim.

Sutaria is also coordinating the disaster response in Tanzania.
